And when I say susceptible, I’m talking surroundings: Gang neighborhoods, poverty stricken areas. You know, the places where developers base their games in that make billions for them.

  • My only addiction has been, is, alcohol. When I see it in shows or in games it triggers that part of me that misses having a cold brew on a hot summers day, or the homely background chatter in a bar with friends, and I get a urge to drink. But the idea sold to me isn't the reality of how my addiction playes out. So I (try) to hold firm. But I never realised until I got older and my addiction partially ruined my life that there's so much alcohol-commercial *everywhere* . As well as excuses, or romantization, or alcoholism. I used those myself. It makes me feel bad whenever loot boxes get discussed, because even if the idea of enjoying gambling is entirely alien to me, I get the idea of an addiction. Of how temptation can be so damning. So seeing it marketed towards kids is atrocious, as both a jurist and an (ex) alcoholic I can say it's also illegal... It's just that lawmaking is much slower than the internet.

  • Loot boxes are a shameless cash grab based solely on random number generation. I don't see how we haven't came to the conclusion that it is gambling, already. I used to play Star Trek Online. There were guys in my fleet that spent over $200 a week on keys to open the loot boxes and the item draws were worse than powerball odds. Pay-to-play format has become a greed fueled disease. I won't play any game with a cash loot shop anymore. Closest I came to that crap as a kid was baseball cards and magic the gathering.

I also bet on sports which i am not gona pretend is my addiction of gambling, the only positive side to that is that i have a limit in which i can control myself that much that i dont put myself into danger of losing all my income, but i am addictive because i cant go a week without betting. and loot boxes are goddamn straight gambling , they give you the same feeling to the teeth, the only way i dont open that many loot boxes is i realize they have absolulty 0 real world value but the problem is if you introduce that to the kids they dont know that yet their world is all about games and school , they dont understand yet that real world value so it has potental to really destroy their lives .. its scummy practice and it should be defaultly banned in games that are advertise to kids. Now go ahead games have a loot boxes in your games but make sure your games is 18+ only ...

  • I work in casino gambling... There's a certain genre of facade in the client-facing aspect of it, usually regarding false certainty of winning, engaging in nonsensical beliefs on how to control outcomes in the players' favor, and encouraging outrageous risky bets. There's also the genre of facade facing the law, and the genre for facing the general public. Video game publishers seem to be the most clueless people in the biz. They can't get anything right. It'd amaze me if they ever found out that the square peg wont go into the triangle hole.

Simulated gambling totally with in game stuff, fine, but if real money is to be involved, it should be direct purchases. Still damn hate microtransactions on fully paid games, tho But hey, money

  • yeah i don't think this happens "because parents aren't aware" as much as it happens "because parents don't pay attention to what their kids are doing", or , "what the world is doing to their kids". it's like some dumb adult believing sugar cereals are healthy because the box says they're fortified with vitamins and minerals. you could argue this is not being aware (which is very true as well), but that education falls on the parent. they should probably make sure lil timmy isn't in fortnight being exposed to degenerates, or at the least, playing minecraft to just dig large crematoriums then burning virtual organisms alive in them for hours on end whilst laughing crazily.

MSF has multiple types of loot boxes, 2 game passes, multiple forced bottle necks, timed releases that go over months or years. They charge 80 to 100 for minor unlocks. It is shameful.

  • Look man I've been thinking about this for a while and I actually have the perfect solution. You want the modern gaming ecosystem to go away with loot boxes and pay-to-win crap and all these miles of worthless microtransactions right??? Believe me when it gets to the point the parents are on the news talking about how these companies rip their kids off believe me that negative PR, it's going to trickle down to almost a stopping point. I mean see the thing is the kids are getting ripped off a lot of kids are getting ripped off but the media doesn't care about kids but you get enough of the parents involved they'll get the media and the politicans involved and I promise you these fucking worthless piece of shit companies that has been ripping us off for all these years while not me but other people will be almost kissing the public's ass overnight. Look at what happened with the creation of the ESRB. Kids were playing violent games nobody cared until the parents noticed it and then the parents started to care enough parents got pissed off that they got ahold of the media and the politicians and BOOM!!! All video games are now rated and not because the kids were pissed off because the company's pissed off the parents who have the voting power and the money.

  • Gamers should not have to pay a single cent for any cosmetic content. That used to be included in games a part of unlockable content based on the player capacity to finish the game or do some sort of achievement, which added to the fun factor and replayability of the game. With the internet era, they found a way to rip off consumers. To make them addicted. They just flat out created a paywall. Sometimes the content is even already on the disk, with should be illegal. The only content a consumer should pay for, is extra DLC that has been developed post release of the game, and that adds a significant amount of content to the game to justify the price. We should speak with our wallets. Think of all the things in life you could buy with the money you are giving away for "digital fairy dust"

When gambling laws were first made, there were no loot boxes, there was no internet, there were no video games. Lootboxes ARE gambling (paying money for random reward), but they are legalised gambling.

Loot boxes gives a random item from a table, and people keeps opening them hoping to get that extra rare thing, just like slot addicts keep spinning hoping to get that extra rare combination of symbols.
